How it began

A Gift That Would Change Everything

Dooby arrived on my 50th birthday — a gift that would envelop our home in love, unity and bliss. I'd had dogs before. I knew the responsibility, the heartache, the way losing one can leave a hole that takes years to fill.

My last dog, Cookie, a sweet black and white cocker spaniel, passed in 2012. With Cookie, life was full — a son to raise, a marriage, a career, side gigs, and the kind of beautiful chaos that leaves little room to slow down. I loved her. But I carried guilt long after she was gone, wishing I'd had more time to just be with her.

Dooby felt like a second chance. A chance to love more presently, more freely, without the limitations that life had placed on me before.

My son DeJean has dark curly hair — I thought, how beautiful would it be to have a dog that matches him? We started looking for a black goldendoodle. We found Dooby almost instantly.

Meet him properly

Duibhin — The Little Black One

His full name is Duibhin — Irish for "the little black one" — but the world knows him as Lucky Dooby.

That name came from my cousin, who has a gift for saying exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment. She started calling him Lucky Dooby — a nod to the legendary Jamaican reggae artist Lucky Dube. We're from Belize, part of the Caribbean with deep Jamaican roots, and the name felt like it was always his.

Dooby turned two on July 31, 2025. We took him to the beach to celebrate. Because of course we did. 🐾

The unexpected gift

What Dooby Did to Our Family

My son DeJean is 24. Strong, tall, quietly masculine. Dooby pulled him out of his cocoon — suddenly there were long walks, fresh air, and a whole neighborhood of people he now knows by name. I watch him give Dooby cuddles and kisses and make the softest little sounds I've never heard from him before.

Dooby gave us our neighborhood. He gave us our community. He gave us each other in a new way.

I've had dogs my whole life. I've loved them all. But I have never bonded with an animal the way I've bonded with Dooby. He is, in every way that matters, my son. I talk to him. I cry to him. I laugh uncontrollably when he wags his whole body just because he's happy to see me.

30 Years of Art.
One Little Dog.

I've been an artist for over 30 years. I understand the need to express love, to celebrate what matters, to hold something beautiful in your hands and feel it.

When Dooby came into my life I finally understood the love that pet parents carry from the inside. It's immeasurable. It's a little irrational. And it is completely, beautifully real.

Lucky Dooby was born from that understanding. And while Dooby inspired it all, Lucky Dooby welcomes every pet — dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, any creature who has claimed a permanent space in your home and your soul.
